Chapter 13

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

*Even if I can talk using human languages and even angelic languages, but don't have love, my speech is just noise, like a ringing bell with no meaning.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

*Even if I can predict the future, solve every puzzle, and know everything, and have strong belief that lets me move mountains, but don't love others, it means nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

*Even if I give away everything I have to help the poor, and even if I let myself be set on fire and have no love, it doesn't do me any good.

4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

*Charity is patient and caring; it doesn't feel jealous or boastful, and doesn't become proud.

5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

*It does not misbehave, does not look for its own interests, is not easily angered, and does not think badly of others.

6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

*Don't be happy about doing wrong things, but be happy about telling the truth.

7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

*Bear everything, believe everything, hope for everything, and endure everything.

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

*Charity always lasts: but prophecies will end, languages will stop, and knowledge will disappear.

9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

*We understand only a little, and our prophecies are also partial.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

*But when complete goodness arrives, then what is partial will no longer be needed.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

*When I was young, I spoke and thought like a kid; but as I grew up, I left behind childish ways.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

*For now, we can only see things blurrily; but later we will understand clearly. Now I understand a little; but later I will fully understand, just like how others know me.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

*Now, faith, hope, and love stay, but love is the biggest.
