Chapter 10

1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

*Now, the Philistines fought with Israel, and the Israelite men ran away from the Philistines, falling dead on Mount Gilboa.

2 And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.

*The Philistines chased Saul and his sons very closely. They killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, who were Saul's children.

3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him, and he was wounded of the archers.

*The fight was tough on Saul, and the arrow shooters hit him, causing him to get hurt from their arrows.

4 Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

*Then Saul told his sword helper, "Take your sword and stab me with it. Otherwise, these foreskin people might embarrass me." But his sword helper didn't do it because he was very scared. So, Saul got a different sword and committed suicide.

5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.

*When the armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell onto the sword and died.

6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.

*So Saul and his three sons, along with everyone in his family, all passed away at the same time.

7 And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

*When the men of Israel in the valley saw that they ran away and Saul and his sons were killed, they left their towns and ran too. Then the Philistines took over and lived in those towns.

8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa.

*The next day, when the Philistines arrived to take possessions from the dead, they discovered Saul and his children fallen on Mount Gilboa.

9 And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people.

*Then, after taking off his clothes, they took his head and armor and sent them throughout the Philistine region to report to their idols and people.

10 And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.

*They placed his armor in the god's house and attached his head to Dagon's temple.

11 And when all Jabeshgilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

*When everyone in Jabeshgilead heard about how the Philistines treated Saul,

12 They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

*All brave men got up and removed Saul's body along with his children's bodies. They took them to a place called Jabesh and buried them under a special tree. Then they didn't eat for a week as a sign of mourning.

13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;

*So Saul died because he sinned by going against the LORD's rules. He didn't follow the LORD's teachings and asked a spirit for advice, which was wrong.

14 And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

*He didn't ask the Lord for help, so the Lord punished him and gave the kingdom to David, son of Jesse.
